Trust seeks public support to help artistes

GUWAHATI, Aug 23: The Shilpi Sahaya Nidhi Nyas, Assam, has been working for the economic upliftment of the artistes of the State. Faced with financial constraints, the Trust has now appealed to the people of the State to help in its cause.

“In 1993, the then Chief Minister of Asom, Hiteshwar Saikia, gave Rs 5 lakh to the Trust. In the same year we organized a fund-raising cultural programme that was a huge success. We got Rs 5 lakh from it. With all that money we have been providing financial assistance to various film, theatre and cultural artistes all these years,” said Trust secretary Mrinal Kanta Das.

A meeting was held today in Guwahati to discuss ways to make the Trust more effective. Eminent film and theatre personalities like Abdul Majid, Dulal Roy, Dara Ahmed and Eli Ahmed took part in this meeting.

“We have decided to launch a website to make people aware of what the Trust is doing. We will appeal to Asomiya people living abroad to provide financial assistance and we also appeal to the people of Asom to come forward and help us in our endeavour to improve the lot of the artistes of the State,” said Das.
