Jorhat Chowk Bazaar project to start soon

JORHAT, Dec 18: The much-awaited Jorhat Chowk Bazaar construction project will be started soon. According to the information received from Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB), the construction works are likely to be started from March next year. Sources also said that, after the amicable discussion of the JMB authority, district administration and some other quarters relating with the said project, the JMB authority has decided to take up the long pending construction project from next year.

The Poverty Elevation Department, Government of India had taken up this project way back in 2007 in respect of various demands from the people of Jorhat raised in different times. Witnessing the dire need to renovate the aged buildings of the historic market, the concerned department had granted an estimated amount of Rs 17 crore to the said project. The department also released more than Rs 1 crore in April 2007 as a part of the total project to initiate the construction work. But due to the strong protest from various quarters, the JMB authority had failed to start the project till date. Although the municipal board authority organized a number of public meetings regarding the matter to come to a unanimous decision but failed to make the same time and again. Therefore, the estimated construction period of the said project had expired in advance without utilizing the Central Government fund. Therefore, the JMB authority decided to take up the project for the greater interest of the people living here.

The Chowk Bazaar is one among the prime identities of Jorhat town during the last many decades. The market is situated at the East part of the town at the side of the NH-37. It is almost at the heart of the town where there are more than two hundred shops consisting of variety of articles. During the eighteenth and nineteenth decades, the Chowk Bazaar was the foremost business complex for the people coming from various parts of the State.

When contacted, an official of the JMB authority said that, all the required process to kick off the mega project is ready and the construction works would be started soon. THE SENTINEL
