NEHU professors quit as heads of department

Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Jan 1: A professor each of the Department of Information Technology and the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of NEHU have resigned as heads of departments with immediate effect after the December 30 incident when some teachers were allegedly assaulted by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists. There were also allegations that KSU activists burnt the question papers and forced the university authorities to call off the examinations on the ground that December 30 is the death anniversary of Khasi patriot Kiang Nangbah.

Meanwhile, the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) expressed its concern and displeasure over the incident. NEHUTA president Prof S Prasad said: “The fixation of dates of examinations, conduct of examination and maintenance of proper security within the NEHU campus are the responsibility of the university authorities. We feel that the university authorities have overlooked these aspects and teachers were unnecessarily assaulted for no fault of theirs.” THE SENTINEL
