Asom ethnic folk festival begins

JORHAT, Oct 3: The two-day long Asom ethnic folk festival has started at Bothaigam Khetra, Rajiv Gandhi Sports Project in Majuli from today. Delegates of various ethnic groups like Deuri, Mising, Bodo, Khamti and Kachari from Sadia, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat participated in the programme with traditional gaiety and staged their own art and culture in the programme.

Today’s programme was started with the inauguration of symbols of the ethnic groups by Majuli SDO Deepak Kumar Handique followed by ethnic artistes meet and a cultural procession inaugurated by Majuli MLA Rajiv Lochan Pegu. A tribal exhibition and tribal food fair was also held on the occasion.

The open session was inaugurated by SDO of Majuli and presided over by Janardan Deva Goswami, Xatradhikar of Uttar Kamalabari Xatra. A souvenir titled ‘Sangskritiki’, was also released by Janardan Deva Goswami in the meeting held on the occasion.

Noteworthy that, the Cultural Affairs Department of Asom Government has taken up a state-wide programme on promotion and preservation of the art and culture of ethnic groups existing in Asom and as a part of this project, this programme was organized. THE SENTINEL
