Panel discussion on role of universities, institutions held

SHILLONG, Sept 6: Focusing on the role of universities and research and development institutions, a panel discussion for North East Region (NER) Vision 2020 was held at the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Saturday. The programme on panel discussion was hosted by ERD Foundation at the RIST campus.

Speaking on the theme of the discussion, convenor and Pro Vice Chancellor of Assam University Prof GD Sharma said, “To be in touch with education, one needs more participation with other organizations, rather than working in isolation.” He added, “To translate the Vision 2020 is to create more professionals who can contribute and innovate new technology for development of the Northeast.”

NEC member PP Shrivastav in his keynote address said, “The main problem in the Northeast is the frustration of the unemployed youths which can be solved only by making the youths stand up on their own.” He also stressed on the need of education that will create a new breed of scientists, entrepreneurs and professionals in technology-driven areas of agriculture, industry and information technology.

NEIST director Dr PG Roa, CSIR former director Dr G Thyagarajan, Dibrugarh University VC Dr KK Deka, UGC Deputy Secretary Dr SC Ray, AAU Director of Research Dr NN Sarmah, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, Dr VT Raju, KN Hazarika and Dr ME Yeolekar were present, among others, in the panel discussion. Moderator of the panel discussion was Centre for Peace and Development Studies and former member of National Security Advisory Board director Wasbir Hussain. THE SENTINEL
